Muscle tissue.
There are three types of muscle tissue:
-
Voluntary or striated muscle. This is
under conscious control.
-
Cardiac muscle. This is the muscle of
the heart
-
Involuntary or unstriated muscle. This
is not under conscious control. It is responsible for moving food
through your intestine and blood through your arteries.
1. Voluntary muscle
Voluntary muscle consists of numbers of fibrils.
Groups of fibrils are joined together to form muscle fibres which, in
turn, are grouped together to form the muscle.
Under the microscope the fibrils can be seen to consist of a series of
bands or striations. These are actually bands of the proteins actin and
myosin. These proteins are responsible for muscle contraction.
