The contractions are started by the SAN (Sino-Atrial Node).
This is situated in the right atrium, just above the Vena cava.

The SAN, or pacemaker, initiates an electrical impulse. The impulse travels across both atria, causing them to contract.

Because the impulse is started at the top of the atria, they contract from the top down.
