Engineering with bacteria

Bacteria keep their DNA in two places:

The nucleoid, which is a long loop of DNA

It contains numerous genes, which are essential to the bacteria.

Essential genes are those which code for proteins that are necessary for the bacteria's survival - for example those involved in respiration or cell division.
